Violins, bows and shoulder rests
Violins come in small sizes for children from a 1/16th size through to a regular full size.
Buying a violin: A good violin for small children begins at around $300 and the quality of sound improves as a violin increases in price. For most students one around $400 to $500 will be produce a good quality sound. It's important to note that quality violins can be on-sold to fund the purchase of a new violin as your child grows (and requires a larger violin size). Second-hand violins are also available and most parents find this option more cost-effective.
Renting a violin: There are a couple of stores around Sydney that rent violins and the cost is around $75 per term. These are often used by younger students who are starting out.
Bows: Whether new or second-hand, or choosing the rental option, all violins come with a bow.
Shoulder rests: All students will require a shoulder rest which holds the violin in place on the shoulder. These can be fitted properly by me on the first lesson. They should come with a rental violin but if going with the new or second-hand option you, will need to purchase one separately.
Blue Mountains Violin can recommend quality suppliers of rental, new and second-hand violins, just ask.
